As of writing this post, I am on my 1,868th post for all my 4 blogs. The past two years of blogging have been a mixed of emotions. I am glad that my blog never answered me back on all my rants and raves during these past two years. Again, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you, my loyal readers, friends and newly acquainted friends for reading my posts and your support of course. I know some of my writing are non-sense but that's how my life evolve now.

Anyway, you may be wondering on the title of this post, "Blog Leave." In the past weeks you might have noticed that I sometimes skip on blogging. Because of that, starting now I will officially call this "phenomenon" as Blog Leave. Thanks by the way to my blogger friend Denis for that catchy phrase. Isn't that cool? If in the office, we have a vacation and sick leave, I think we bloggers should have a blog leave as well. Hahaha. That is pre-approved of course. Hehe.

I think it is just normal that lately I don't feel like writing. It has been toxic maintaining four blogs, working in the office until 6 P.M. and dropping Entrecards at night while watching TV series on my laptop. I have to change something in my cycle to balance things out. Speaking of dropping Entrecards, I have that story on my next post.

Blogger Template

After I have acquired makoyskie.com, I have been stressed out and so busy. I want to finish it immediately so I could focus on other things. I am even troubled on looking for the right Blogger template for my new blog. I even asked help from my blogger friends and so far, the right template hasn’t showed up yet.

I am also troubled in bidding good bye to my old personal blog. It has been a sweet two year blogging experience and it is definitely sad for me. Anyway, life is about moving on and looking at things positively. I just hope my friends and loyal readers would still support me in my blogging career.

2008 Philippine Blog Awards Winners

Last night after I went to mass, I went online and checked the latest happenings in last night’s awarding of the 2008 Philippine Blog Awards. From the blogs that I have read, the awards night started around 6 P.M. I arrived our flat around 7:30 P.M. and at that time the final award for the night was to be announced. I even went to the 2008 Philippine Blog Awards website where there is a live streaming of the awards night. The sad thing is that there is no audio and video (Thanks to SMART for that!).

I was nominated at the Blogger’s Choice category and was quite excited to hear the winner. I was hoping to win but in reality there is no chance that I would win. For obvious reasons that my co-nominees are well-known and all of them deserve to win. Since there is no video streaming, I just logged in to Asrael’s site where there is a chat applet. Batang Yagit won for the Blogger’s Choice. Congratulations, you definitely deserve the award.

To the other winners, congratulations and let’s make blogging an opportunity to show the world how Filipinos are opinionated and smart tech savvy.

Just this morning, I was ecstatic to learn from a friend that I am actually nominated in the Blogger’s Choice category of the Philippine Blog Awards 2008. How To Summarize Posts In Your Blog

Are you fed up in adjusting the number of posts you are displaying in your blog after publishing a long post? Now you can control the number of words per post you display in your blog. By just following these instructions, you can display a shorter version of your post in your main blog. It’s just a bit complicated so you have to be careful and make sure to make a backup copy of your blog template.

Here goes… At your Dashboard, go directly to the Layout link. Click afterwards the Edit HTML link of the Layout page. Look for this code ]]></b:skin> by clicking Ctrl+F. The code is right after the CSS code. Paste this code after ]]></b:skin>:

After pasting the code, click the Save button. Still at the Edit HTML page, check the Expand Widget Templates followed by searching this code <data:post.body/> by clicking Ctrl+F. Paste this code after <data:post.body/>.

Now to display a shorter version of your post, you have to add this code on the start of your post and at the end of each post. I suggest you start on your new posts since you will have a hard time back tracking your old posts.

For example you want to display only Mark Ferdinand from the text Mark Ferdinand Tayag add the code to this format:

The output would be like this:

How To Add Google Inline Text Ads

Blogger now has the capability of displaying Google ads in between of your blog posts, which is called the inline text ads. The sad thing is you can only display a maximum of three Google ads. By the way, before displaying Google inline text ads, make sure to count first the number of Google ads in your blog. I think there are a maximum number of Google ads you can display in your site, three I guess. If you exceed with the limit, it will just display a blank ad.

Anyway, to add a Google inline text ad in your blog, go to your dashboard then click the Layout link. Once you are at the layout page, click the Edit link at the blog posts page element. It will launch a new page with the settings of the blog posts page element. Click the checkbox “Show Ads Between Posts”. The setting for the inline text ad will be displayed after. Just change the corresponding fields for the number of post interval and the text ad format you want then click the Save button. Make sure to check your blog after if you are already satisfied with your ad format.

Voila your Google inline text ads are ready to make money.

How To Add Top Commentators In Your Blog

Here’s another way that can make your avid readers to regularly post comments in your blog. If you can see in my right sidebar, I have a list of top commentators. The list is sorted in descending order meaning anyone who has the most comments will be on top. The widget I used was actually from Yahoo! Pipes. You can visit their site or just do the shortcut with my little help.

Here’s what you should do. Just copy the code below then just change the properties of the following:

How To Add Bookmark Sites On Your Footer

There are a lot of goodies or widgets that you can add in your blog that can make it more reader friendly. Not can it only benefit your reader but you as well. According to Wikipedia, “Social bookmarking is a method for Internet users to store, organize, search, and manage bookmarks of web pages on the Internet with the help of metadata.” Social bookmarking is one of the tricks that can bring traffic to your site. Some well-known bookmark sites are Digg, del.icio.us, StumbleUpon and Technorati. I can attest to this that after submitting posts to these bookmark sites, it generated huge impact to my reader base.

To make it easier, you can add the bookmark sites link in your post footer just like what I did in this blog. Just be patient in following the instructions that I will give and you’ll be good to go. The step-by-step procedure is only for blogger user by the way. At your Dashboard, go to the Templates link then select Edit HTML. Make sure to save your current template for backup just in case you will encounter some error in the coding. After your backup, click the Expand Widget Templates button. Look for the code <div class='post-footer-line'> by pressing Ctrl+F or Find in your browser. Paste this code at the end of that code then click the Save Template link. If you want to limit the number of bookmark sites, you can just delete the entire row code for the undesired bookmark site. You can also include graphic icon of bookmark sites instead of links. Just Google for the icons then include its location on the code. As easy as that.

4th Philippine Blog Summit Part III

Atty. JJ Disini was the next speaker and discussed about the law that can protect and inhibit bloggers. There were lots of questions asked by the audience mostly about copyright infringement and how we can protect our contents. Did you know that you cannot use copyrighted music in any of your vlogs?

After the forum of Atty. Disini, Maria Jose, a blogger from Davao City was the next speaker. Fresh from Davao, her blogger group travelled to Manila just to grace the summit. Sadly, I did not have the time to greet them. I personally know Batang Yagit from his blog but I did not have the guts to greet him first. Maria Jose’s speech was fresh among all speakers. She shared her humble beginnings until the success of Davao City and Mindanao bloggers. I was very impressed with their shared efforts. I just hope bloggers from Manila can do the same thing or I am just aware of such thing. Another thing that impressed me was their boasting that Davao City is actually Wi-Fi free city. Nice huh!

Giveaways from the sponsors were the next event. All of them gave away t-shirts that mostly says “I love blogging!” I really wasn’t that lucky with raffles so I expected that I will go home with nothing. To my surprise I won a shirt from the iBlog 4 organizers and 100 worth of Yehey! bretas. How I wish I could wear the shirt from iBlog4 when it is size XL. Two of me can fit to it. Hehe.

Picture taking happened after. I even had the chance to take pictures with Manuel L. Quezon III, Janette Toral, Aileen Apolo and my blogger friends. I also had the chance to give my calling cards with my blogs and my name on it. At the entrance of Malcolm Building, the “mascot” of Chicken Mafia was there to take pictures. According to them, they will post the pictures to their website and you can even add a caption to it. Nice huh! I hope I look great on it.

4th Philippine Blog Summit Part II

Juan Carlo Licudine of Pinoy Blogero was the third speaker and discussed about pro-blogging. I actually thought the meaning of pro-blogging was in favour of blogging but in reality it means earning money from blogging. With that I can consider myself as “semi” pro-blogger since I am not earning $1000 a month like Pinoy Blogero. He really looked unprepared and most of the time he was lost of words. He was just reading the material from his PowerPoint presentation. Speakers should be prepared especially in events like this since the audience are expecting a lot. This is one of my fears with these summits/seminars that some speakers are not even prepared or even credible.

After Pinoy Blogero’s material was the lunch break. Our packed lunch was fried chicken, fish fillet and of course rice. We were given one hour break and we have decided to eat near the Sunken Garden. We went back to the Malcolm Building after to have our coffee. I got to meet another batch of bloggers such as Jerome and Geri.

Photo and comic blogging were the topics discussed by Norberto and Jonas Diego respectively. Aileen Apolo and Macoy discussed about Podcast and vlog. They even have an audio visual presentation just for this topic. This topic somehow inspired me to try this type of blogging. Maybe my next step after changing my template is to do vlog. Will my readers even appreciate me on videos?

Noemi Dado was the next speaker that discussed about blogging for advocacy. Aside from her personal blog that is dedicated to his deceased son, her latest advocacy is to change the image of Filipina in the World Wide Web. If you got the chance to search the word “Filipina” in search engines, you will be bombarded with information about dating sites, pornography and even made to order bride sites. They are urging the bloggers to blog about Filipina and to link their site Filipina Images to make it on top of the search engine result page (SERP). I will try to compose one post in the future.

Luz Rimbian, Manuel L. Quezon III and Janette Toral were the next speakers. The three of them discussed about Election blogging and how important bloggers in discussing untapped information about election. They are even optimistic that by 2016, bloggers can be accredited by COMELEC. Isn’t that great?

4th Philippine Blog Summit Part I

My first ever attendance to a blog summit happened yesterday at the 4th Philippine Blog Summit. It was held at the Malcolm Theater, College of Law at University of The Philippines, Diliman. According to the organizers, the summit will start by 9 A.M. so I met my blogger friend by 8 A.M. at Mc Donald’s, Quezon Avenue. We had our breakfast there then went straight to the UP Campus. Since I am just familiar with the College of Engineering, we gave our trust to the jeepney driver to drop us at the College of Law. When my friend blogger suddenly saw a poster of the iBlog 4, we got out of the jeepney for the having the impression that that’s our building. Disappointingly, my friend’s intuition was wrong. We ended up asking a vendor for the location of the College of Law.

It was past 9 in the morning when we arrived the building. The organizers asked for our names then gave our IDs, summit materials and food stubs. This summit is totally free and have I mentioned that WiFI is also free. I just had a mistake that I did not bring my laptop with me for having the fear of my laptop being snatched.

Charo Nugid was the first speaker. She discussed about Blogging 1-0-1. Since I consider myself as an old blogger, I was kinda bored with the topic. In the spirit of bloggerly love, I will try to just share positive feedbacks of the summit. Not! The next speaker was the famous Australian blogger, Brian Gorell. He was unable to be here in the Philippine but was able to record a video in YouTube for us bloggers. His video was basically about his blogging life. The only entertaining part of his video was his legs being bitten by mosquitoes. After Brian Gorrel’s video, the organizers gave the floor to the audience to pitch their blogs. I was scared to talk to many people so I just keep my cool on my seat.

Snacks were given after Brian Gorrel’s video presentation. I got to meet my fellow blogger in flesh such as Maki Eduardo, Prudence, Mica, Macuha, Ambo, Dexter and Azrael. Thank you by the way to those bloggers that approached me first. I was somewhat surprised that they know me by face. My blog header was definitely a plus factor with these summits.

Business Wonderland

Blogs are growing by millions as days pass by. Just like YouTube, blogs now serve every facet that human can ever think of. Blog domains can tackle stuffs over and under the sun. Having different kinds of blogs makes the digital domain more interesting and beautiful because it presents various takes on different issues and happenings. Some blogs can also take on the concept that goes beyond a personal diary. Yes! building a niche blog is a trend nowadays. These are blogs that focus on a single purpose and there exist a unity of topics and posts. Niche blogs are very helpful because they tackle topics that are presented in a credible manner just like this one blog that I heard people are tagging as MyonlineBuzz. It is like a business bible that serves as a guide into engaging in business “wonderland” especially online business. The blog is called Business Fuzz. Ironic to its name, the blog is actually packed with good insights about online business networks and products. I like the simplicity of this blog and the clean layout. The author’s way of writing is also quite a catch because it is basically definitive and clear, letting every reader get the juicy extracts of every posts.

I myself am a business enthusiast and reading business-focused blogs really ignites a lot of brainy potentials in me. So here are my cheers and kudos to those who make niche blogs and I hope to see more!

How To Disable Right Clicking In Your Site

Ever wonder why when you right-click on my site, there a message that says, “Right-clicking has been disabled?” Well, I actually added a code in my blog that restricts right clicking. So, what’s this right-click disabling can do to your site? Not only it will protect you from others copying your text content and pictures but it will also restrict others from viewing your source code. If you are an IT person like me, of course there is a technique that can make you still copy and view source codes.

Thanks by the way to Itot for the source code. If you are a blogger user, all you need to do is to go to your Dashboard then click the Layout selection. At the layout screen, click the Add A Page Element then choose HTML/JavaScript. Paste the code then click Save. Refresh your web site then try right clicking on your site. Voila!

How To Gain Your Page Ranks

I have been receiving questions on how I gained my Page Rank back. Here are the things I did that I got from a SEO eBook.

First, be reminded that Page Rank is all about links, links and links. Make sure to regularly check your Links page if the sites you have linked are still linking you. Linking them without them linking you will just drag your PR down. Erase immediately!

Second, still in your Links page, after checking if you are still linked with those sites, check with Google if that site is banned. If the site is PR 0 then the site might be banned. To double check, go to the Google website then search for the exact URL of the site (http://makoyskie.blogspot.com). If there are no search results then the site is positively banned. You must immediately delete their links or you will eventually be penalized and receive a PR 0. Take note that new sites are an exception to this since it will take time to be indexed in Google.

And lastly, review the Guidelines for Webmasters provided by Google. You might be doing stuffs that are actually prohibited. Better be safe than sorry.

U Comment, I Follow: How To Remove nofollow Code In Blogger

Are you curious if the comments you are posting in blogs are counted in Google ranking? The answer is NO. This is because blogs have incorporated a blocking code or the “nofollow” code in which links used in comments are generally for link addressing only.

I think it was last month that I saw this “U Comment, I Follow” badge. I was curious about it but I didn’t have the time to research about it. It was only yesterday that I was able to read about it. Apparently, bloggers have discovered a way to disable this “nofollow” code. Meaning, blogs with disabled “nofollow” code can now show link love to their readers. This will of course result to better search engine ranking.



So, how will you able to disable it? This by the way is only applicable to Blogger users. At the Blogger Dashboard screen, click the Layout link followed by clicking the Edit HTML link. Make sure to backup first your template and to tick the “Expand Widget Templates” checkbox. Still at the same screen, press Ctrl + F or Find then type the word “nofollow”.

Once you find this line ‘data:comment.authorUrl’ rel=’nofollow’ then you are on the right track. Delete the code rel=’nofollow’ then click the Save Template button.



Latest addition 3/7/08 4:13PM:
I am not recommending that you delete the "nofollow" code in your templates. Google just penalized me because of this. My Page Rank as of the moment is now 0 from the former PR 4. Waah!

Schedule of Publishing of Posts In Blogger

Good news to Blogger user, you can now schedule your publishing of posts. If you’re like me that are unhooked on the Internet on weekends, you can now schedule your posting so you would have a post on your desired date and time. Isn’t that nice? This feature would somehow help boost my low web traffic during weekends.

This new feature by the way is still unannounced from Blogger but I was able to get this trick from a fellow blogger. Thanks again to Allen.

So, how are we able to schedule our posting? Instead of logging in to the usual Blogger.com, you need to login to http://draft.blogger.com/home. You don’t need to worry, it’s a legit Blogger beta testing site. Okay, so go to the usual Compose Post. After you’re done with your typing, click the Posting Options. At the date and time section, enter your desired posting date and time. This of course is based on your time zone. Click the Save button then the Publish button. Make sure to click the Save button before the Publish button. A message that your post will be published on your encoded date and time will be displayed. As easy as that.
