Energy Saving Bulbs Contain Mercury

If you are thinking of going green and want to help the environment, I think you have to know about this. If you are purchasing energy saving light bulbs then you should know that some of the light bulbs in the market contain mercury. In Singapore, light bulbs should contain less than 10mg of mercury to be Green Labeled. The Green Label is given by the Singapore Environmental Council or SEC to environmental friendly products that meet international standards.

According to the report, only four out of 27 light bulbs brands in Singapore market have the Green Label. We consumers should at least be careful in handling these light bulbs. In case you accidentally broke it, immediately open your windows to improve ventilation. Broken particles should be placed in a plastic bag and it should be sealed before disposing.

Mercury not only has detrimental effects to the brain, it can also cause acute poisoning, gum problems and even tremors.
