Page Rank Know-How

I was chatting with a fellow blogger last week about “Page Rank.” According to him, my blog has a ranking of 4. According to his understanding, the higher your rank the better. I researched it on Wikipedia and learned many things about it. Did you know that the founders of Google Inc. created Page Rank? Cool huh!

WHAT IS A PAGE RANK?
According to Wikipedia, “PageRank is a link analysis algorithm that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of "measuring" its relative importance within the set.” In short, a page rank determines the popularity of a site based on hyperlinks.

USE OF PAGE RANK
What are the other uses of a page rank aside from determining the popularity of your site? It is actually one of the basis of review opportunities for paid sites. If you have a zero ranking in Page Rank you may have less opportunities in these sites. Exchanging links among bloggers is also very important. Did you know that leaving comments in sites also increases your page rank? Further, being linked to someone with a page rank higher than yours is a great opportunity to increase your current page rank.

One thing to note though is that a Page Rank is not real time and is only released every three months.

HOW TO CHECK YOUR PAGE RANK
You can check your blog’s page rank by downloading a Google toolbar. Once the site is displayed, point your cursor to the Page Rank button to see your ranking.
